Suranaree scholars: Rectors urged to drop neutrality

A group of 50 lecturers from Suranaree University of Technology yesterday circulated an open letter calling for the governing body for universities to renounce the flawed leadership of caretaker Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra.
"The University Rectors Conference should stop any mediation which will allow the rogue government leader to cling to power," the open letter said in reference to the attempt to hold negotiations between Thaksin and his opponents. The governing body for universities should also drop its political neutrality and help to sway justice, it said.Under the Constitution and relevant education laws, universities are obliged to instil ethical and moral standards in the learning process, it said, adding that educators would fail in their duty if they continued to associate themselves with the rogue leader. - The Nation. --------------------------------------- Media groups tell PM: 'Time for a chat' Two media professional groups yesterday reminded caretaker Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra to honour his word and appear before a panel of news editors to answer questions relating to the Shin Corp sell-off. In accepting the joint invitation of the Thai Journalists Association and the Thai Broadcasting Journalists Association two weeks ago, Thaksin promised to meet the local press before the vote. He has yet to schedule a firm date. "If Thaksin fails to explain himself before the April 2 election day, it is deemed unfair to urge people to cast a vote without necessary information," media representative Wimolphan Theepathawatchai said. Thaksin ought to dispel doubts on his ethical and moral standards rather than dodge the matter, Wimophan said. Media professionals are ready to allot the time needed for him to present his side of the story, she said. - The Nation. --------------------------------------- Banharn in hospital: TRT bigwigs visit Two Thai Rak Thai mainstays yesterday visited Chat Thai leader Banharn Silapa-archa, who was hospitalised on Sunday. Deputy prime ministers Surakiart Sathirathai and Wissanu Krea-ngam visited the Chat Thai leader at Ramathibodi Hospital and enquired about his health. Surakiart said he talked to Banharn about the destruction on Tuesday of the statue of the Hindu god Brahma at the popular Erawan Shrine by a hammer-wielding man with a history of mental illness. Wissanu said Banharn enjoyed the chat and appeared to be recovering very well. Earlier this week, caretaker Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra telephoned the hospital to check on Banharn's condition. - The Nation.
