On holiday and jobless

More than 10,000 Bangkok students have been left without summer jobs despite a government promise to create 30,000 positions specifically for them, a source said yesterday.
A total of 32,042 students applied this year at the government's "Good Jobs That You Can Do" fair for students at Bangkok's Nimibut National Stadium from March 11 to 13 and the Education Ministry's Ratchamangkalapisek Building from March 11 to 20, the source said. In the public sector there were 5,879 student applicants, for the private sector, 26,163. Despite a promise of 30,000 jobs at the beginning of the fair, only 13,200 jobs were available - 2,200 public-sector jobs and 11,000 private-sector jobs. As a result more than 10,000 students have missed out, the source said. Students evidently have a growing interest in working while on a break from their studies. Last year just 7,431 students applied for jobs, 26,000 fewer than this year. The number of students looking for private-sector work increased tenfold this year, and more than 1,500 students this year sought government work. The government has bankrolled a Bt200-million project aimed at providing 200,000 private and public-sector jobs for secondary-school and university students. If and when these jobs are created the students will be paid about Bt25 an hour.
