ATTA holds urgent meeting

The Association of Thai Travel Agents (ATTA) will hold an emergency meeting in Bangkok today in an attempt to slow visitor cancellations, which reached 65,000 this month.

ATTA president Apichart Sankary said political unrest was damaging tourism, with US, Chinese and Singaporean visitors most likely to cancel a trip.

The association, which is meeting at the Mandarin Hotel, wants measures to boost tourist confidence and called on the government to resolve the crisis.

"More tourists will cancel their trips if we can't re-establish their confidence," said Apichart.

The Tourism Authority of Thailand yesterday reported its latest arrival figures

with at least 65,000, mainly Chinese and Singaporean tourists, cancelling visits in March.

The agency has denied for months that tourist numbers are decreasing, but has now admitted to losing large numbers.
