Uthai urges PM to quit

Former House speaker Uthai Pimchaichon yesterday urged embattled Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra to quit, saying the nation has no shortage of capable leaders to replace him.

"If Thaksin quits now, the worst that could happen is his supporters would be crying at home. Should he stay, insurmountable problems are looming," Uthai said. Thaksin may not be aware of his shortcomings and should resign in order to reflect on his flawed ethical and moral standards.

With the number of disqualified candidates, it will be impossible to fill 500 House seats, he said, adding the poll is poised to become meaningless rather than a fresh mandate as Thaksin might have hoped for.

"Thaksin's exit is expected to encourage the three opposition parties to rejoin the electoral process, allowing politics to return to normal," he said.

Uthai - speaking at a public forum organised by the Thai Journalists Association - said Thailand had plunged into political turmoil because Thaksin's leadership style led to divisiveness in society.
