Rural folk, taxi drivers to rally for Thaksin at Morchit

About 25,000 demonstrators will today gather at Morchit bus terminal to show support for caretaker Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra.
"We have no intention of creating divisions in our country. We just want to inform society that there are still many villagers and poor people who want Thaksin to continue his work," Atthawit Singkham, a leader of pro-Thaksin farmers and villagers, said yesterday.
Up to 15,000 people from provinces in the North, Northeast and Central regions spent last night in Pathum Thani. They will join about 10,000 taxi drivers at the bus terminal today.
"We will then send representatives to meet the premier and tell him about our problems," Atthawit said.
The number of Thaksin supporters travelling to Bangkok had been growing since about 800 farmers started their journey from Ubon Ratchathani, Atthawit said.
"More and more people have come to join us," he said.
However, some members of the group from the North said they were being paid Bt200 to Bt300 a day, while others from the Northeast said they were getting up to Bt500 a day.
"We will get a free ride home after the rally," one said.
