'Both sides should refrain from confrontation'

The following is an excerpt of His Majesty the King's speech given on May 20, 1992, to the then prime minister General Suchinda Kraprayoon and Chamlong Srimuang, who led street protests calling for Suchinda's resignation.
The problem today is not one of legislation or amending the Constitution. Today's problem is about public morale and public safety. Now people everywhere are feeling insecure, fearing danger. They fear that the country will collapse and it will be hard to cure. This is what I heard from abroad because now both my son and daughter are abroad. They both know and are trying to notify people in those countries that Thailand can handle the situation. But I feel it is a bit of a high hope if we do not end the situation that has developed over the past three days. So I would especially like for General Suchinda and Maj-General Chamlong to turn to each other and not to confront each other because this is our country, not a country of one or two people. It is the country of everyone. Turn to each other and do not confront each other to solve the problem. Because there is a problem, when it happens we use the words "madly angry." When people use violence, they are not aware. In the end, they do not know why they hit each other or what problems they want to solve. They only want to win. And who will win? No one. It is dangerous. There is only defeat. All sides suffer defeat. All confrontational parties suffer defeat. The country suffers the heaviest defeat. People across the country not only in Bangkok [suffer]. Suppose only Bangkok is damaged, the damage is also done to the whole country. What use is there in being proud of your victory when you are on top of ruins and wrecks? So both sides should refrain from confronting each other and turn to each other. Both of you are representatives of all sides, not just two sides but all sides that are confrontational. Help solve the problem, which is the ongoing violence. When this problem is cured, you can talk and consult each other on how to develop and restore Thailand. This is the reason I have sent for both of you and I believe that you both understand that you will become the ones who will rebuild the country from ruin and you will gain more personal merit than just doing goodness. How you want to fix [the country] is up to your consultation. I have an observation that the president of the Privy Council, and Privy Councillor Prem, are senior figures ready to give advice with neutrality for the love of the country to guide the country to safety soon. Help build the country.
