More wear black at ministry

Some 50 officials at the Foreign Ministry yesterday wore black suits and ties to express disapproval of Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra despite the objections of their superiors.

Directors-general of the International Organisation, East Asia and Information departments wore black to work, joining colleagues who have done so since early this week in protest at what they call a government rendered illegitimate by corruption and abuse of power.

The pioneers merely said they were all dressed for a funeral. The Civil Service Commission ruled on February 21 that officials as individuals had the right to express political opinions in accordance with Article 64 of the Constitution. "It would violate the 1992 Civil Service Law only if such individual officials exploited their official status to express political views or carry out activities against the government," it said.
