'Time to cancel TRT TV'

Two organisations that promote freedom of expression yesterday called on caretaker Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra to stop using state-run broadcast media as a "propaganda machine".

The government is using all state-run broadcast media as well as a private media linked to associates of Thaksin to support the election campaign of the Thai Rak Thai Party, read a statement signed by the chairpersons of the Campaign for Popular Democracy and the Campaign for Popular Media Reform.

The statement called on iTV, the independent television station set up after the May 1992 uprising, to take the people's side rather than continue to protect what it called an illegitimate government.

The statement also demanded that military TV and radio stations report information from all sides and allow news and information about the anti-Thaksin protests to be broadcast.
