Support from North

Chiang Mai - Members of grassroots businesses and One Tambon One Product (Otop) stores will descend on Bangkok in support of Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra.

Promsak Saenpho, president of Otop, said his network launched the campaign because Thaksin's Otop project had generated considerable income for rural people.

Promsak said some 1,700 Otop members in Chiang Mai had made pro-Thaksin banners.

He said supporters from across the country would give "paper birds of freedom" to protesters at Sanam Luang to make them think about peace in the society.

"We don't want confrontation or violence - we want peace," Promsak said.
