Cabinet backs Bt27-bn computer procurement

The Cabinet yesterday approved Bt27.2 billion for the Education Ministry's mega-project to procure 250,000 computers for schools nationwide, deputy government spokesman Chalermchai Mahakitsiri said.

The money will also be used to establish a high-speed Internet network, Chalermchai said. The Cabinet approved the procurement project in principle late last year and yesterday's final decision would enable the scheme to be implemented, he said.

Also yesterday, the Cabinet approved Bt601 million to fund an Education Ministry scheme to help poor students find part-time jobs during school terms, spokesman Danuporn Punnakan said.

The budget would be provided by the Government Lottery Office (GLO).
