Nida calls for a royally appointed govt

The National Institute of Development Administration (Nida) yesterday released a statement supporting a caretaker prime minister appointed by His Majesty the King in a bid to resolve the political turmoil.
"[Caretaker Prime Minister] Thaksin Shinawatra should resign his position immediately, paving the way for the citing of Section 7 of the Constitution to usher in the royally bestowed government tasked with steering the country out of the political crisis," the statement said. Nida's Public Administration Faculty dean Sombat Thamrongthanyawong said Thaksin was no longer fit to serve because his flawed leadership had caused divisiveness. Nida lecturer Thaweesak Sutwathin said the government was using the snap election as a ploy to cling to power. If the election takes place next month in spite of the opposition's boycott, the turmoil might spiral into a full-blown confrontation between proponents and opponents of the government, he said. Bangkok Senator Seree Suwanpanont said Thaksin's resignation was thought to be the only way that Section 7 could be applied, as it could be used only in the case that no other Sections were applicable to the situation. However, he said, a royally appointed prime minister was not the real solution to the current political turmoil. "An intermediary for a joint meeting among Thai Rak Thai, former opposition parties, and the People's Alliance for Democracy as well as any other groups involved is crucial to relieve the conflict," he said.
