Princess writes new book in honour of MR Kukrit

HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn is to launch her book "Thailand's Administration from Ayutthaya to Early Rattanakosin" in honour of MR Kukrit Pramoj, her late private lecturer.

The book is compiled from notes the princess made when she received private lessons from Kukrit more than two decades ago. He was Thailand's 13th premier, a scholar, great writer and the founder of Siam Rath newspaper.

"At that time I was still a student at Chulalongkorn University's faculty of arts," the princess writes in the preface. She goes on to say she had to adjust to a large classroom with more than 100 students after having become used to a small class where it was easier for students to ask questions.

The princess' enrolment to the university marked the first time that a high-ranking royal member received higher education in Thailand's state university. She also sat in the central university entrance exam like other students.

"There was no big problems when I was studying there except that I complained like a child about how difficult philosophy was. Therefore, Her Majesty the Queen invited Kukrit to be my private philosophy lecturer," the princess says.

She later moved on with Kukrit to Thailand's history, including its politics, law and economic and social systems as well as its culture.

"I later passed some of this knowledge on to my students at Chulachomklao Royal Military Academy," the princess said.

The Chulalongkorn University book centre and the Chulalongkorn University printing house will jointly unveil the princess's book to the public. Priced at Bt150, the 142-page volume will be on sale at a book fair between March 29 and April 9 at the Queen Sirikit National Convention Centre.

"The first run is 10,000 copies," the printing house's president Asst Prof Manit Rujiwarodom said.

He said lecturers at the university's faculty of arts had checked the book content to ensure the accuracy. In the book's preface, the princess said she never showed her notebook to Kukrit,

so it was possible that some parts of the content might be wrong

or missing.
