PM calls for postcard campaign

As he desperately struggles to hold on to power, caretaker Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra yesterday appealed to Thai people to flood his office with postcards before next Sunday to show how they love peace and democracy.

"Please send me postcards or letters as soon as possible. I will place them on the lawn in front of Government House to show that most Thais want everything in our country to be like it has been - that they don't want violence and bloodshed," he said.

Thaksin said he didn't want to bother his supporters to travel to Bangkok to support him, as sending postcards would be better. He denied that the volume of mail would be an indicator of the government's popularity.

As Thaksin arrived at Government House yesterday morning, he appeared tired with bags under his eyes. Leaving his car he raised a sign with the address for people to send the postcards.

He was in tears when a villager gave him a "Phra Paireepinas" - a Buddha amulet - at Muang Thong Thani when he chaired a meeting with nation-wide mayors.

Meanwhile, whenever Thaksin appeared in public yesterday, or gave interviews to reporters, he consistently dismissed the widespread rumours that he will resign under pressure from the rallies and opposition parties.

"Rumours in the stock market say I will resign. Don't believe it. Somebody wanted to manipulate the market," Thaksin said.

"Actually, I left office the day I dissolved the House. But I will have to be caretaker prime minister until the election is done and a new government is formed," Thaksin said.

He added he would be candidate No 1 on the Thai Rak Thai Party-list and lead the candidates of his party to register with the Election Commission today. He also denied that he had met Privy Council's chairman General Prem Tinsulanonda.

"I haven't asked for an appointment with him yet," he said.
