Students clear way for PM to go

Ramkhamhaeng University Student Union yesterday suggested a way for embattled Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra to exit the crisis over his leadership - amend four charter provisions and call a snap election.
"The country has plunged into political turmoil and relevant parties are obliged to overcome it," the student union said in a statement. In order to resolve the political stand-off, Thaksin should push through four constitutional amendments before asking the people to elect the next government, the union said. Article 209 of the Constitution should be rewritten to spell out in detail that a prime minister must not commit, condone or harbour conflicts of interest, it said. Article 185 should be revised to make it easier to launch a censure motion against a prime minister. Instead of needing the endorsement of 200 of 500 MPs, the number should be halved to 100, the union said. The union also called for the Senate to be appointed by the Privy Council and said the educational requirement needed to run for political office should be scrapped. Meanwhile, Ramkhamhaeng University's Alliance for Democracy, which has support from 1,000 students at universities across the country, issued a statement calling for Thaksin to resign because he had lost his legitimacy to run the country. The group will hold a rally today in front of the university to put pressure on the government. They will then decide whether to join the anti-Thaksin rally on Sunday at Sanam Luang.
