Up-and-coming star Pongpisut Pew-on yesterday became the youngest Thai to play professionally in Singapore's S-League.
Pongpisut, whose nickname is “Taengmo”, yesterday signed a one-year contract with the Gombak United Football Club in Singapore. However, his monthly salary has not been revealed. His father, former national team striker Piyapong, told The Nation yesterday that he believes his son will gain a lot of experience playing in the S-League. “Many Thais are now playing professionally there and I hope he will gain much valuable experience there,” he said. “He missed the chance to serve the national team in the SEA Games because he was carrying an injury he picked up while playing for the Thai under-18 team.” However, Piyapong admitted he is not certain if his son will make it into the national team. “The national team is studded with strong players and I am not sure he is good enough to serve the nation,” he said. “He still has much time to learn about playing professionally, but he will to do his best.” After recovering from his injury, Pongpisut was contacted by Surachai Jaturapatarapong, a Thai who coaches the Gombak side in Singapore. Surachai asked him to go to Singapore for a selection trial. His talent immediately caught Surachai’s eye and the coach did not hesitate to add the young prodigy to his team list.
