Judges must quit: lecture

A group of 50 law lecturers from 14 different universities yesterday issued an open letter demanding the resignation of eight Constitution Court judges who opposed an inquiry on Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra's conflict of interest last week.

“Instead of launching the inquiry as prescribed under the Constitution, the eight judges refused to carry out their constitutional duties,” the open letter said.

In the eight-to-six verdict, the judges ruled that the Senate petition lacked specific details needed to call a hearing into whether Thaksin violated conflict of interest laws over the Shin Corp sell-off.

The petition invoked Article 209 of the Constitution, stating that Thaksin had a conflict of interest by being involved in the deal while holding office, which is an impeachable offence.
