Students call for PM to go

University students in the North and Northeast rallied Monday in support of the push to oust Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, joining a growing political “re-awakening” by students around the country over the past two weeks.
At Khon Kaen University, some 150 people endorsed the signature campaign to initiate impeachment proceedings against the PM, student leader Anantachai Phokham said. And at Sakon Nakhon Rajabhat University students and their counterparts in the Northeastern Students Federation teamed up to call for Thaksin’s resignation, said student representative Withaya Khamphusaen. “Events have been organised at campuses across the Northeast to highlight how and why Thaksin no longer has the legitimacy to govern,” Withaya said. Students in the Northeast are expected to issue a statement on Sunday – to coincide with the anti-Thaksin rally in Bangkok – demanding the prime minister resign, he said. On Thursday, students at Maha Sarakham University plan to stage a rally to condemn Thaksin’s leadership, according to student leader Chatcharin Chaidee said. In the North, a student group at Chiang Mai University, Brave Step for Democracy, issued a statement in support of the signature campaign to impeach Thaksin, launched by Thammasat University in Bangkok. The group said it would solicit 2,000 signatures from people at the university. But it ruled out seeking support outside the university for safety reasons, because Chiang Mai is Thaksin’s home town. Thammasat University’s Student Union said yesterday it has collected 33,000 of the 50,000 signatures required to launch an impeachment action. The Nation
