Next rally ‘biggest yet’

An outspoken Thai Rak Thai Party MP yesterday predicted the February 26 rally at Sanam Luang will be the biggest demonstration yet against the Thaksin government because of the public’s disappointment in the Constitution Court.
The MP, Premsak Piayura, said the people were disappointed that the Constitution Court refused to review a petition by 28 senators who alleged that Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra’s position had become untenable because he allegedly still had control over Shin Corp prior to its sale to Temasek Holdings. The court last week rejected the petition on grounds that the senators did not have enough evidence. Premsak, who has attacked the government several times, called on the state broadcast media to report in full next Sunday’s rally. He said he worried that if the state-owned channels ignored the demonstration, it could lead to violence like in May 1992 when the state media failed to report events. Premsak disagreed with the government’s plan to organise a rally of its supporters on March 3. “It’s highly inappropriate for the government to organise a rally just to show that it has more supporters, as we all know people will be there because they are organised. So far few people who join organised rallies in support of the government have been paid their allowances and transport costs,” Premsak said. Thaksin is a source of on-going political problems, Premsak claimed, because he refused to listen to other opinions. He said a constitutional ruling, requiring candidates to be members of a party 90 days before an election, was also causing problems.
