Isaan universities add voices to protest

PROTESTERS WAVE a flag that reads 'Ying [oust] Thaksin'. About 5,000 people attended a People's Alliance for Democracy rally in Songkhla yesterday where Sondhi Limthongkul gave another anti-PM speech.
Students of 52 colleges and universities in north-eastern provinces will hold a meeting next month to agree on a strategy to topple Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra.

The planned meeting of the 52 institutions was announced after members of six establishments participated in a seminar on the allegations that Thaksin had been concealing his shares in Shin Corp prior to its sale to Singapore’s Temasek Holdings.

The six institutions were Rajabhat Institute Nakhon Ratchasima, Suranari Technology University, Wong Chavalitkul University, Northeast Technology University Nakhon Ratchasima, Rajamangala Technology University Nakhon Ratchasima and Princess Mother Nursing College.

The seminar agreed to organise the student meeting on March 12 to map out a common strategy to force Thaksin’s resignation.

The seminar was held at the Rajabhat Institute and around 2,000 people signed up in support of coordinating anti-Thaksin campaigns by students.

During the seminar, Somkiat Pongpaiboon, president of the Rajabhat council, said he would visit Nakhon Si Thammarat, Phuket, Narathiwat, Pattani and Yala to invite people to join the anti-Thaksin rally at Sanam Luang on February 26.

Kochawan Chaibutr, secretary general of the Student Federation of Thailand, told the seminar that student activists did not side with anyone in their campaign against Thaksin but were fighting for their rights and to end government dishonesty.
