Thai men, women, fail to make

[BADMINTON] Thai players’ hopes of making the finals of the Thomas and Uber Cups evaporated in the heat at Jaipur, India, on Friday during the preliminary rounds.
The Thomas Cup is one of the biggest badminton tournaments in the world for men, while the Uber Cup is the equivalent for women players. The Thai men took two points from arch-rivals Indonesia before losing 3-2 in the Thomas Cup, while Thailand’s women players inflicted a shock 5-0 loss to Hong Kong in the Uber Cup to collect their second win from five matches. Boonsak Ponsana upset Taufik Hidayat 22-20 21-19 to give Thailand a great start in the first men’s singles in the Thomas Cup before Poompat Sapkulchananart scored another unexpected win for the team with a 21-19 13-21 21-10 win over Sony Dwi Kuncoro. But the Indonesians took charge in the remaining matches. Saimon Santoso comfortably beat Peerasak Wiriyapadungpong 21-13 21-11, while Luluk Hadiyanyo and Alvent Yulianto eliminated Sudket Prapakamol and Patapol Ngernsrisuk 21-13 21-19 in the first doubles. Indonesia earned a third point from the second doubles after Markis Kido and Hendra Setiawan dismissed Nitipong Saengsila and Songpol Anukritayawan 21-14 21-15. The Thai women’s side ended their preliminary matches in style by beating Hong Kong in all five matches. Boonsak’s younger sister Salakjit toppled Yip Pui Yin 21-14 21-9 and Monthila Meemek added the second point for Thailand, beating Wong Sin Yee 21-11 21-12. Sitee Prucksapaisarnsilp won the third point for her team following her 21-18 21-11 win over Ng Ka Shun. Doubles specialists Saralee Thungthongkam and Sathinee Chankrachangwong ousted Louisa Koon Wai Chee and Li Wing Mui 21-11 21-19 to pick up the fourth point before Kulchala Worawichitchaikul and Duang-Anong Arunkesorn had an easy 21-13 21-9 win over Chow Hoi Wah and Wong Man Ching. However, despite the Thai women’s victory over Hong Kong, their earlier results were not good enough to get them through to the next round. The teams qualified for April’s Thomas Cup final are Malaysia, Indonesia, India and South Korea. Hong Kong, Singapore, Taiwan and South Korea all booked places in the Uber Cup final.
