MP wants to punish ‘ the 28’

A Thai Rak Thai MP says he will organise a petition of government members to force out the 28 senators who tried to bring impeachment proceedings against Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra over the sale of Shin Corp.
Sakorn Prompakdi of Sakon Nakhon accused the senators of “showing disrespect to the Constitution Court” by not accepting its decision and vowed to have them removed from the Senate, even though their terms expire at the end of March. The court on Thursday rejected the senators’ petition for an inquiry into alleged conflict of interest, and therefore they should stop trying to bring down the prime minister, Sakorn said. “When people who have responsibility for legislative power but don’t respect the law, then it means they are destroying the law,” he said. Sakorn said next week he would seek signatures from Thai Rak Thai MPs to send to the Senate speaker demanding the 28 senators be sacked. Deputy TRT spokesman Chatuporn Promphan said the Senate term ends in March so the signature campaign would not mean much to the senators. While their petition to the court may have been stifled, the senators would still be able to continue their opposition by joining the next anti-Thaksin rally on February 26. “Sakorn’s idea was probably just in response to the move by the 28senators. However even if we do gather the signatures the senators will still be able to continue to oppose the premier,” Chatuporn said Chiang Rai MP Buasorn Prachamorn said he disagreed with Sakorn because the Senate’s term expires soon. “Although the 28 senators’ performance was pathetic, it is a waste of time [to gather signatures] in my view. Those senators are like a sunset – we do not have to do anything with them because their time will end in March,” he said. Ratchaburi MP Pareena Kraikupt said she was ready to support Sakorn because the 28 senators “were not operating within the rules”. Sucheera Pinijparakarn The Nation
