Bomb injures 13 in South

At least 13 people were wounded when a bomb planted by suspected militants went off while police were investigating a shooting incident in a remote Narathiwat village yesterday.

Pol Sub-Lieutenant Thanthi Amornchaikul said 11 of the wounded were police dispatched to the scene in Tambon Thanyongmat where Sunthorn Wanwilai, 44, was killed.

Thanthi suspected insurgents were responsible for the home-made explosive. A team of police and soldiers, all appearing nervous, was sent to inspect the scene of the second attack.

Also in the restive South, Sawean Nooplod, a security guard at a local Irrigation Department office, was gunned down while riding his motorcycle in Yala province, police said.

Investigators said they believe the assailants went after Sawean on their motorcycle and fired more shots at close range, hitting the victim in the head and face four times. He died instantly.
