Islamic leader’s son arrested on assault weapons-dealing charge
Police yesterday arrested the son of a senior Islamic Committee member in Nonthaburi for the alleged possession and attempted sale of assault weapons.
Undercover officers disguised as weapon traders told Nattapan Wan-alor, 27, they were seeking to buy various kinds of assault weapons, including two M3 submachine guns and a Thompson submachine gun. Nattapan allegedly led the undercover officer to his home in Bang Buathong district and showed them the weapons. Nattapan is a son of Anan Wan-alor, 50, secretary of the Nonthaburi Islamic Committee and a nephew of Arun Wan-alor, a senior member of the Central Islamic Committee of Thailand. Following Nattapan’s arrest, police found other firearms in his house, including a .38 handgun, a 9mm pistol, and several rounds of ammunition. – The Nation. ------------------------------------------ LESE MAJESTE: Democrats due to report to police Democrat Party deputy leader Khunying Kalaya Sophonpanich must report to the Metropolitan Police Bureau investigator by 10am today – or a court will be asked to issue an arrest warrant for her, police said yesterday. Bureau deputy chief Maj-General Kamol Kaewsuwan said five Democrats had been called to answer charges of lese majeste. But Kalaya, a party-list MP, was “protected” being at a House sitting, so they had to postpone the appointment again. However, the defendants’ lawyer said they would all meet the prosecutor today. The five defendants include Kalaya, her deputy, an MP’s assistant, an MP candidate and his deputy. They face charges for alleged involvement in the distribution of campaign stickers quoting two royal statements in January last year– ahead of the Feb 6 election. The police bureau has suggested that the public prosecutor file a criminal lawsuit against the defendants for lese majeste by printing the Royal statement without permission. – The Nation. ------------------------------------------ Thai Airways: Four contenders for president’s post Thai Airways International Plc yesterday announced a shortlist of four candidates for the position of company president. All four are existing THAI executives. THAI chairman Wanchai Sarathulthat said the candidates are: Chinawut Naressaenee, executive vice president of the customer services department; Apinan Sumanaseni, executive vice president of operations; Norahuch Ployyai, executive vice president of standards and general administration; and Supachai Limpisvasti, managing director of the technical department.
