Police yesterday shot dead a suspected militant after a gunfight near a temporary checkpoint that was set up to nab him, a source said.
A team of police had lain in wait for Baheng Maleetae, 40, at the checkpoint in Bannang Sata tambon, where he was expected to meet a contact.
An arrest warrant had earlier been issued for the alleged militant. Police confronted Baheng as he approached the checkpoint. Baheng then fled on foot and dived into the Pattani river after trading gunshots with the police. The gunfight continued for about five minutes, during which time Baheng was shot dead. The Nation
