Clash of the taekwondo titans

Can karate-do fighter Yanisa Torattanawattana match the might of taekwondo exponent Yaowapa Boorapolchai? “Beat me if you can,” the latter said.

Yanisa, gold medallist at the recent SEA Games in the Philippines, decided to shift her career to taekwondo, pursuing her dream of winning Olympic gold, since karate-do is not an Olympic-medal event.

The Taekwondo Association of Thailand plans to give her a place in the flyweight category, where Yaowapa, bronze medallist at the Athens Olympics, has been fighting.

“I don’t mind if Yanisa replaces me in the flyweight division, but she has to prove she can beat me,” Yaowapa said by way of a challenge.

Yanisa replied, “I’m a novice and I don’t think I can match her. At the 2005 SEA Games in Thailand, I will still compete in karate-do to defend my crown. Whether I can succeed in my new career is something that remains to be seen.” - The Nation.
