SEA GAMES: HOSTS leap ahead

Thailand 2nd in the medal standings. Hosts the Philip-pines stretched their lead in the medal standings to a commanding 33 gold yesterday, leaving Thailand in a distant second place with 18 gold, one better than Vietnam. But there was sad note for the Thai squad, and particularly karate expert Yanisa Torattanawattana. The in-form Yanisa became the first Thai since the 14th SEA Games to win a gold medal in her sport. Yesterday she beat Malaysian Lee Phei Sze 7-4 in the final of the women’s kumite individual open event.

Four gold for Thais in track and field

Thai athletes won 13 medals in the SEA Games track and field competition yesterday – including four gold – and made a clean sweep in the 4x100-metre relays with the women’s squad breaking an eight-year record. A total of 13 gold medals were up for grabs on the third day of the SEA Games track and field competition at the Rizal Memorial Stadium yesterday and Thai athletes made a major contribution to the initial target of 13 gold medals overall at the Games.

Outrage as ‘Nong View’ loses in first round

Thai taekwondo officials and team members were outraged yesterday after Olympic medal winner Yaowapa Boorapolchai lost her first round fight against a local girl after some dubious decisions by the judges.
