THAIS CASHING IN

Nongnuch wins gold and Bt1 million. Track star Nongnuch Sanrat not only won Thailand’s first gold medal at the Asian Indoor Games yesterday, but also collected Bt1 million for her brilliant run - the same amount of money offered to Thai athletes for gold medals at the SEA Games later this month. Another Bt1 million also went to Thailand’s Sowatee Boonnue in the wai kru flyweight competition - a one-round contest held for the best pre-fight ritual. There were only five competitors.

Brothers make a splash in the pool

The Yimsomruay siblings turned their dream into reality at the Sports Authority of Thailand swimming pool last night by winning the silver and bronze medals in the 200m individual medley at the Asian Indoor Games. Supported by 1,000 cheering fans, younger brother Kunakorn finished second and his elder brother Pathunyu following close behind to realise their dream of winning medals together in the pool.

Judo team set to give rivals the chop

The Thai judo team are fit and ready for this month’s SEA Games in the Philippines and have vowed to put a stranglehold on at least four gold medals from a total of 16 in the sport.

TAMARINE COMES GOOD

Women’s No 1 Tamarine Tanasugarn won her first trophy of the season yesterday after defeating Japan’s Miho Saeki in two easy sets in the final of a US$50,000 (Bt2 million) Chinese Women’s Circuit event in Shenzen.
