Kenya and Thailand have signed an agreement to establish a joint trade and investment commission for bilateral cooperation, mainly to attract Thai businesses to Kenya.

Speaking on Wednesday with visiting Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra and his delegation, President Mwai Kibaki called for increased Thai investments in Kenya. He encouraged Thai investors to take advantage of the huge market and investment opportunities available in the East African community and the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA) by investing in Kenya.

The president and Thaksin also witnessed the signing of a memorandum of understanding between Kenya and Thailand on cooperation in the field of wildlife management. Kenya’s Minister for Tourism and Wildlife, Morris Dzoro, and Thailand’s Minister for Natural Resources and Environment, Yongyut Tiyapairat, signed the deal, which has been criticised by domestic and international wildlife protection groups.
