Good draw for Thais in Manila

[SOCCER] The Thai squad have received a good draw for this month’s SEA Games football competition and the seven-time champions are in Group A with Malaysia, Cambodia, and the Philippines.

Group B has Vietnam, Burma, Laos, Indonesia and Singapore.

Worawi Makudi, the secretary-general of the Football Association of Thailand (FAT), said he is confident that the team will win an eighth SEA Games title, but said the final round could be tough.

“We are a little bit lucky because we will not face the strong teams like Vietnam and Singapore. I believe we will get to the final round smoothly,” said Worawi.

The format for the SEA Games is a round robin, with the first and second team in each group playing for the medals.

National team head coach Chanvit Polchivin is convinced his players will cruise through all their matches, but added that they will have to concentrate on every game.

“My lads must play strictly according to my tactics. They should not keep an eye only on the score,” he said.

“However, teams like Vietnam and Indonesia are well prepared for the tournament. So until now, I cannot predict who we’ll play in the final,” he added.
