Train derailed in insurgent attack in Narathiwat

Published on October 27, 2005

A train running between Sungai Kolok and Sungai Padi districts in Narathiwat was derailed on Thursday after bombs that were planted on railway tracks exploded.

Police said a passenger of the trains was injured and rushed to a nearby hospital.

Initial investigation showed that suspected insurgents planted the explosives on the railway tracks and linked it to the detonator from nearby bushes.

Police found debris of extinguishers on the scene, making them believe that the militants packed the explosives in the extinguishers.

The blast caused a pit of a meter deep and 3.2 meter wide. The Nakhon Si Thammarat-bound train was heading to Yala when the blast went off.

The explosions resulted in suspension of all trains in the deep south. Railway officials were repairing the tracks and it is not known for now when the service could be resumed.

The blast occurred just hours after suspected militants launched 63 coordinated attacks in Yala, Narathiwat and Pattani province on Wednesday night.
