The two elephant sisters that suffered severe injuries earlier this month after stepping on a landmine near the Burmese border are recuperating well, their veterinarian said yesterday.
Six-year-old Moje and her two-year-old sibling, Motu, have bounced back from their life-threatening injuries and both are now able to eat normally, said Preecha Puangkham, chief veterinarian at the Friends of the Asian Elephant’s hospital, where the two animals are receiving treatment.
Moje’s right hind foot and Motu’s left front foot were shattered by the mine after the animals had wandered into a military zone inside Burma. Dead tissue has been removed from both elephants’ feet, Preecha explained, adding that hospital staffers needed to tie down Motu during treatment because she was resisting attempts to be injected by antibiotics and painkillers. Preecha also said eight elephants hospitalised after eating toxic grass were recovering. The Nation LAMPANG
