BANGKOK: Car import duties surpass the Bt1-billion mark in August
Thailand imported 1,624 automobiles last month through various ports, generating more than Bt1 billion in import duties.
Although there were more Japanese cars imported in August, European cars generated more duties. Importers bought 1,235 cars from Japan, including 621 Mazdas, three Hondas, three Subarus, 214 Suzukis, five Peugeots, 56 Nissans, one Mitsubishi, one Daihatsu, two Fords and 329 Toyotas. The government collected Bt489 million on these vehicles, according to the Customs Department. There were 322 European cars imported, including 191 Mercedes-Benz vehicles, three BMWs, five Porsches, 22 Volkswagens, six Chevrolets, one Jaguar, 25 Citroens, 14 Peugeots, one Ferrari, two Maseratis, 13 motorcycles, three Saabs, 11 Audis, one Alfa Romeo and 24 Mini Coopers. These cars generated Bt585 million in duties. Korean imports included 56 Kias, 10 Ssangyongs and one Daewoo. These cars generated Bt8.6 million in import duties.
