LOP BURI ATTACK: Enraged villagers try to lynch accused rapist

More than 1,000 people descend on suspect. Despite unusually tight security, the accused in the brutal assault and attempted rape of a 14-year-old girl was yesterday attacked by an angry crowd during a re-enactment of the crime in Lop Buri’s Sa Bot district, prompting police to cancel it. Wirat Raksinil, 37, who has confessed to assaulting the schoolgirl on Saturday, was yesterday morning taken to three locations to re-enact the crime with about 150 police officers guarding him from more than 1,000 angry onlookers.

Volunteer tutors brush off threat of gunfire to serve in South

Unshaken by the ongoing violence, as many as 177 teachers from around the country are today heading to the three southernmost provinces to give Grade-12 students free tutorials for the upcoming university entrance examinations. The teachers have volunteered their services hoping to help the students in the deep South, whose education is often interrupted by gunfire and explosions. The tutorial project, which begins today, will continue till Monday and cover extensive lessons in physics, chemistry, mathematics, social studies, Thai and English.

Prisoners did kill themselves: police

Police yesterday closed an investigation into the suspicious group hanging of three drug suspects in custody at Muang Lamphun police station, citing security camera footage that showed no intrusion into the detention facility. Police Lt-General Phanuphong Singhara na Ayutthaya also stated an autopsy report by Chiang Mai University found no toxic substance, poison or tranquilliser in the blood of the three men, only methamphetamine which they used long before their deaths on October 3.
