Criminal court scraps Hangthong cremation

Published on September 06, 2005

The Criminal Court yesterday ordered the cremation of Hangthong Thammawattana be suspended, while the late MP’s brother Noppadol said he would seek a third autopsy on the body.

At the court hearing, lawyer Theerapol Kanchanakard said the relatives would not cremate Hangthong’s body as scheduled today because it was still a key piece of evidence in the case.

The court said that the Hangthong murder case was still being tried and although the court had earlier denied a third autopsy requested by Noppadol, who has been charged with conspiring to murder his brother, he still had the right to appeal.

As a result, the court ruled the body to be suspended from cremation until the case was concluded.

On hearing the verdict, Noppadol said he would appeal for another autopsy, adding that many witnesses believed it was still possible to determine the “real” cause of death.
