Noppadol succeeds in having cremation denied royal sponsorship

Royal sponsorship for the cremation of late MP Hangthong Thammawattana has been withdrawn at the suggestion of one of his brothers.

Noppadol Thammawattana said yesterday that he and Hangthong’s son Jangwat had petitioned the Office of His Majesty’s Principal Private Secretary against a request by an unnamed politician that the cremation ceremony be granted royal sponsorship.

Noppadol, who faces charges of conspiring to murder Hangthong, said cremating the body would destroy a key piece of evidence in the case. After examining documents supporting his claim, the office decided to withdraw royal sponsorship, he said.

However, it was likely the cremation would go ahead on Tuesday as scheduled. Noppadol said his brother, Parinya Thammawattana, told him he would continue with the cremation plan despite the ceremony being denied royal sponsorship.
