Surayud to speak on royal powers

General Surayud Chulanond, a Privy Council member and former armed forces supreme commander, will give a special speech next week on “Powers of the King” at an academic gathering.

The event, organised by Thammasat University’s Sanya Dharmasakti Institute for Democracy, will be held at 2pm on Tuesday in the LT1 Room at the university’s Faculty of Law.

The speech will precede a panel discussion on the same topic with speakers such as MP Pramuan Ruchanaseree, author of “Phra Ratcha-amnat” (The Royal Powers), Senator Kaewsun Atibodhi and senior journalist Sondhi Limthongkul.

Somkiat Worapanya-anan, the institute’s director, denied any political implications to the event and said it was strictly academic.

“We have heard a lot about the political and legal aspects of the matter. Now it’s time to get the academic perspective,” he said.
