STATE OF THE ARTS: What’s that smell?

Published on August 27, 2005

Swiss-born artist Liliane Zumkemi takes a humorous sniff at smells in “Crazy Soap”, her new solo show at Tadu Contemporary Art from September 2 to October 15. On arrival you’ll be invited to wash your hands with soap that looks like a tiny brain but smells like chocolate. Her photo series “Bangkok Smell Project” is about the absence and presence of favourite aromas.

The gallery, located on the seventh floor of the Barcelonamotor Building on Tiamruammit Road, off Ratchadapisek Road, is open Monday to Saturday from 9.30am to 6pm.

Urban abstracts from America

Self-taught American artist Joshua Mills presents “Diametric”, his first solo show in Bangkok at Eat Me Art Restaurant from September 1 to October 29.

The 27-year-old offers a collection of 10 abstract oils that juxtapose natural and man-made forms, complex configurations that explore interaction between the two worlds within an urban setting.

The restaurant-cum-gallery, located on Soi Phi Phat II just off Convent Road, is open daily from 3pm to 1am.

Glimpses of temples

Paintings of temples by Wanlop Meemak will be on display at H Gallery from September 5 to October 22.

The semi-abstract oils are variations on a theme: views of the same four temples. The images are framed so that we only see a half-hidden detail of a facade, the shadow of an architectural element or an electric wire against a wall and window shutter.

The gallery, at 201 Sathorn Road Soi 12, is open Thursday to Saturday from noon to 6pm.

Pop collage in the spotlight

After working behind the scenes as art director for several TV shows, Jurairat Kulpanich steps into the spotlight with a collection of fanciful pop collages experimenting with contrasts between flat backgrounds and dense, crinkled paint.

The show takes place at Jamjuree Art Gallery from September 16 to October 3. The gallery, near Bangkok’s Mah Boon Krong shopping centre, is open weekdays from 10am to 7pm and weekends from noon to 6pm.

For more information, call (02) 218 3709.

Dual exhibitions

The award-winning works of the 27th Bualuang Painting Contest are currently on display at the Queen’s Gallery. The winning pieces are divided into three categories - traditional, semi-traditional and contemporary - with 61 other works also on show.

Sharing the same space is an exhibition by art instructors at Silpakorn University, who are commemorating Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn’s 50th birthday. Among the participating artists are Chalood Nimsamer, Prayad Pongdam, Rung Therapijit and Ittipol Tangchalok. Proceeds from the sales go to the Princess’ charity projects.

Both shows continue until September 25. The gallery, on Rajadamnoen Klang Road off Phan Fah Bridge, is open daily except Wednesday from 10am to 7pm.
