IT'S ALL IN THE GAME: Paradorn has Odette rooting for him

Published on August 17, 2005

The two have been saying that nothing is going on between them, but anyone who tuned into the Cincinnati Masters Series tennis match on Monday between Paradorn Srichaphan and Guillermo Coria would have had trouble believing supermodel Odette Henriette Jacqmin and the Thai No 1’s denials about a love affair.

During television coverage of Paradorn’s match against the Argentine, the French-Thai model, sporting a red cap on her head, was caught by the camera as she rooted for her close friend from the side of the court.

For the second consecutive week she was seen sitting in Paradorn’s camp after also appearing during a match in Montreal last week.

The part of the telecast that raised the most eyebrows here was when the camera zoomed in on the Thai model and a subtitle described Odette as “Paradorn’s girlfriend”. It seems that there are just some things that can’t be hidden when you’re a public figure.

Southern woes don’t scare Napaporn

Although the gravity of the situation in the South does seem to have diminished, it will not stop national team tennis player Napaporn Tongsalee from returning to her hometown of Hat Yai.

“Robbie’, her Islamic nickname, plans to visit her dad in Songkhla province this weekend, even though the region is not quite the ideal place to go these days.

The doubles specialist said she was not worried about the terrorists in the southern region and would live a normal life once she is home.

“I’m still going out to see some friends. I think everything is okay now. But my aim is to visit my dad. It will be my first time home in two years,’’ she said.

Professor is lost for words

Local badminton chief Prof Charoen Wattanasin was at a loss for words at a recent press conference to announce that Saralee Thungthongkam and Sathinee Chankrachangwong would compete in the women’s doubles in the World Championships in the US.

Saralee and Sathinee both turned up at the press conference in T-shirts and jeans and with very short hair – a bit like the skinhead look.

As Charoen introduced the two to the media, both walked onto the stage looking more like men than women. There were whispers among the press corps that the two didn’t look very feminine.

“Saralee and Sathinee are ranked No 6 in the world and they will play in the women’s doubles,” said Charoen.

While Saralee was standing next to Sathinee on the stage, a TV reporter jokingly shouted at Charoen: “No. They will play in the men’s doubles.” Charoen started laughing. “Men’s doubles? Okay, I agree,” he said.
