Privy Councillor Dr Kasem Wattanachai and Professor Thanomsri Srichaikul have been named as this year’s winners of the prestigious Mahidol-B Brown Prize.
The prize has been awarded every year since 1993 to outstanding medical professionals by Mahidol University and B Brown (Thailand) Co Ltd.
Kasem and Thanomsri will each receive Bt700,000 and a certificate of honour from Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn during a ceremony on July 8.
Kasem, a former education minister, was credited for his distinguished cardiology work and the achievements of the “Pracha
Asa” Group, which Kasem founded. The group, which helps doctors, nurses and dentists to
provide healthcare to residents in rural areas, has organised 217 trips and treated about 97,000 patients.
Thanomsri and her team won the prestigious prize for their haematology research on malaria, dengue haemorrhagic fever and cancer of the lymphatic system.
Their work also included stopping the bleeding of patients who had a low amount of plateletapheresis due to abnormalities in the immunity system.
