Gates’ visit agenda

Published on June 24, 2005

Microsoft chairman Bill Gates will outline his vision for the integration of technology in the country with the theme “Thailand Digital Inspiration”, and announce three major new projects in partnership with the government during his one-day visit next Thursday.

Gates is scheduled to meet HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn and PM Thaksin Shinawatra, make two presentations to IT professionals, government officials and businessmen, and meet participants in the firm’s lifelong learning programmes.

“While in Thailand, Bill will present how technology can drive business value for companies through the integration of technology,” said Andrew McBean, MD of Microsoft Thailand. “He will then go on to outline a firm road map that will cover three areas: supporting lifelong learning, building of the local software industry, and integrating public sector information for the benefit Thai citizens.”

On Thursday morning, Gates will address business leaders and government officials on Microsoft’s vision for the future of IT, where innovation in technology will integrate people, IT systems and information. Gates will cover how integrated innovation could affect Thailand and its businesses at an event in the afternoon that is expected to be attended by up to 2,000 delegates from the IT industry and addressed by Information and Communication Technology Minister Suwit Khunkitti.

Executives from Microsoft’s US headquarters will follow this up with presentations on the firm’s key future products, including Whidbey, Yukon and Longhorn. Finally, Microsoft Research will showcase the latest developments in consumer technology.

Gates will also meet winners and participants in Microsoft Thailand’s lifelong learning programmes, including Partners in Learning, Microsoft Office Specialist Olympic competition and the Imagine Cup, at an exclusive exhibition. Competition winners will get a chance to have their photograph taken the guru.

“We have been working on some big projects with the government over the past year and Bill’s visit will see those initiatives explained in full,” McBean said. “Bill is fully behind the projects here in Thailand and is aware of our efforts to help contribute towards building Thailand’s software ecosystem. These new announcements will reinforce our commitment to the country. Ultimately, we will see how today’s projects will benefit the Thai economy and the individual by truly integrating technologies and building skills.” Details are at www.msn.co.th/billgates, which has a contest with the chance for a member of the public to meet Gates. – The Nation
