Former premier Seni Pramoj remembered on 100th birthday

The Democrat Party has urged people to join in commemorative ceremonies on Thursday to mark the 100th birthday of the late former prime minister, Seni Pramoj.

Democrat deputy leader Vithaya Kaewparadai said yesterday Buddhist rites would be held at 100 branches of the party in urban areas across the country, to honour Seni’s contribution to the nation.

Vithaya said Seni, a former Democrat leader, had committed his life to the nation as a four-time prime minister and as the leader of the “Seri Thai” movement, which sought to free Thailand from Japanese occupation during World War II.

He said many people regarded politicians as nasty people, but some actually did many good things for the country and they should be honoured.

An exhibition illustrating Seni’s life will be presented at the Democrat Party’s headquarters until December, he said.

SUVARNABHUMI AIRPORT

Funds sought for security office

The National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) will tomorrow ask the Cabinet to approve a budget of Bt8.8 million to set up a national security office at Suvarnabhumi Airport.

A Government House source said the NIB reasoned in its request for the budget that an office was needed to monitor people deemed a threat to national security and to prevent them from entering the country.

ILLEGAL LOANS

Four moneylenders fined

Four convicted loan sharks were yesterday given suspended jail terms and fines of Bt1,000 each.

The Northern Bangkok District Court found the defendants, all of them men, guilty of illegal money lending and exceeding the legal limits for interest rate charges.

The defendants were Tassana Naknil, Anusorn Tawaroj, Kittipong Suksawat and Suthichai Nao-osot.

The four were arrested last Friday in Bangkok’s Bueng Kum district in possession of ledgers containing details about their debtors and name cards advertising their money-lending business.

The men admitted to all the charges.

The court, citing the defendants’ confessions, sentenced them to three months jail and a fine of Bt1,000 each. The jail term was later suspended for two years.
