Radiant youth battled with autism

Mother’s dedication was example to others that condition can be overcome

Born on August 16, 1983, Khun Poom Jensen was the second of Princess Ubolratana’s three children. He studied at Kasetsart University’s faculty of education, majoring in physical education.

His Majesty the King’s grandson held a special place in people’s hearts for his radiant personality, sweet smile, enthusiasm and the courageous battle he and his mother fought against his autism.

After leaving the United States and returning to Thailand with his mother in 2001, Khun Poom quickly endeared himself to the Thai public. He was always seen walking side by side with Princess Ubolratana, who devoted her time to bringing him up with loving care.

The 21-year-old was proof of the princess’s dedication. On many occasions she advised parents of autistic children to bring them out of their isolated worlds to learn and live happily in society. They realised this was not so impossible when they saw how happy Khun Poom was in every activity he undertook.

Khun Poom loved outdoor sports and recreation, including equestrian pursuits, jet-skiing, swimming, football, badminton and shooting.

He also took a keen interest in cooking, which further helped him to improve his motor skills. He had his “Khun Poom Home-made Bakery” and baked and sold his pastries for charity at Kasetsart Demonstration School and Yuwaprasart Hospital.

Khun Poom went missing when a tsunami hit his beach resort at Khao Lak in Phang Nga’s Takua Pa district on December 26.

His body was found at the re-

sort on December 27 and was flown to Bangkok in a private aircraft piloted by HRH Crown Prince

Maha Vajiralongkorn, Princess Ubolratana’s younger brother. His Majesty the King bestowed royal funeral rites under his patronage on Khun Poom.
