SMS canvassing nod

The Election Commission has approved a proposal to allow political parties to use mobile-phone text messages to woo voters ahead of the general election, an SMS programmer said yesterday.

Seung Ho Choi, chief marketing officer of MDM I and C Ltd, said he sent a letter to the EC asking it if he could help political parties to use Short Message Service (SMS) technology to woo voters. SMS was widely used in Korea before elections, he said.

But the plan was not to everyone’s liking.

Mobile-phone network DTAC said it would not forward political messages because it wanted to remain neutral, while AIS said it wanted to keep the service for customers.
