A goalkeeper for Thailand’s national women’s football team was among thousands of victims killed on December 26 in the tsunami. Her family and friends on Sunday identified her body from among other corpses stored at a local temple.
The body of Nongkran Petchpoonsap, 27, was identified by help of her jeans, wristwatch and three-coloured wristlet. Nongkran, who worked as a fitness instructor at a Phang Nga hotel when the tsunami struck, was the national team’s goalkeeper at the 2001 SEA Games, which the Thai team won.
Her relatives and friends burst out crying after identifying her body. On seeing Nongkran’s body, her grandmother fainted. The national athlete died in her hometown.
